Flight
Love will pull us together.
In the dark I hasten after you,
Trying to lure creation with a prayer,
To rouse the wind
From a bed of leaves.
The imperishable is always with us
But the forms we secretly cherish
Drift off one by one,
And their reality becomes as questionable
As the handiwork of dreams.
Here, in this world that is not as solid
As we believe,
Let me wrap my arms around the whirlwind.
Let me step into the dust-filled air,
My feet overwhelmed with flight
And treading not seconds, but eternities.

Speech
Our words are rugged now;
Their grace flown suddenly out
Like sunlight in the evening,
Coarse replicas of the essential prayer
Latent in the heart of things.
Someday I want to come again
To the true, unspoken language,
Beyond semantics, where river does not mean
A simple swath of water
But a state of indescribable flowing.
Where our common tongue will be shared
With flowers, roots and stars,
And our names signify
One anonymous center
Out of which
The world’s music flows.
